Russian PM Calls for Greater Local Supply of Rough

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov called for “adjustments” to Alrosa’s rough diamond sales policy, ensuring local manufacturers enough goods with which to work at full capacity.

Speaking at a government meeting Thursday, Kudrin said that, because Alrosa is now revising its supply policies, as their deal with De Beers is about to end, the change in supply should be immediate.

According to the Governor of the Smolensk, Victor Maslov, Russian polishing facilities are performing below capacity. To change this, they will need a steady supply of rough diamonds, he said, adding that local supply should be given precedence over exports.

Maslov told the government that the supply should be “without price preferences.”
