The most popular diamond cut in the world is the Round Brilliant with 57 facets. The Round Brilliant appears as a prism with ideal proportions and shape. The light that gets into this diamond is repeatedly refracted and wholly returns back creating an impression of inimitable shine and luster in the eyes of the observer.

Diamonds of this shape have been cut and polished for many centuries, although the contemporary cut is associated with a scientist of Russian origins - Marcel Tolkowsky. Back in 1919, relying on mathematical calculations he put forward ideal geometrical parameters which reveal the optical features of a diamond to their best advantage. Since that time, the diamond has been regarded as a classical standard of a polished diamond.

Today, round brilliants are not only the most widespread cut, but also the most expensive, as in the process of cutting and polishing the irrecoverable losses are rather high, and reach more than half of the stone’s original weight. At present the bulk of round brilliants are manufactured according to a special technology so that at the output the stone could get a Triple Excellent grade- for its ideal proportions, symmetry of the facets, and polish. Not every manufacturer of polished diamonds is able to maintain such high quality, that is why products that do not conform to these criteria are called “commercial”, whereas the best, the excellent make is called “ideal” or “Smolensk”.

Owing to its ideal parameters and visual splendor, round brilliant diamonds are in high demand among customers, and are used by jewellery makers most frequently. These stones are excellent almost in any jewellery piece, be it a classical engagement ring with one or several diamonds, or earrings, a pendant or a bracelet.
